WELLS — The Wells girls soccer team gave up three quick goals on Monday night and the Warriors were never able to recover as they dropped a 6-1 decision to the visiting York Wildcats.
“York is a very good team. A team that we knew we had to come in and play as well as we could,” said Wells head coach Doug Cottis. “I thought we battled hard.”
The Wildcats could not be stopped on Monday night.
Six minutes into the contest, Bella DeLuca scored for the Wildcats. Anabel Santini crossed the ball in front of the goal and DeLuca poked it in to produce a score of 1-0.
Four minutes later, the Wildcats scored again.  At the 30:10 mark, Halee Bando rammed the ball into the Warriors’ net.
With six minutes left in the first half, Eliza Linn scored the third goal for the Wildcats.
At the 3:13 mark, the Warriors scored their lone goal. Franny Ramsdell crossed the ball in front of the goal and Hannah Cottis knocked it into the corner of the goal.
“We had Hannah Cottis up front and she got a good pass from Franny Ramsdell on the outside. Franny beat her isolated 1-on-1 and gave Hannah a great pass — Hannah made a great move to beat the girl in the middle and hit it in the corner. It was a great goal,” said Doug Cottis.
The Wildcats would put the game away in the second half as they scored three more goals.
York would score right out of the gate as Linn found the back of the net just 37 seconds into the second half. Anabel Santini provided the assist on the Wildcats’ fourth goal.
Three minutes later, Linn completed the hat trick with her third goal of the contest.
With five minutes left in the contest, Haley Smith scored the last goal for the Wildcats.
The margin of victory would have been much larger if it wasn’t for the incredible play of Wells goalie Lauren Bartlett. The senior stopped nine tough shots throughout the game.
“She had a great game. Unfortunately, she had a lot of work. Lauren is a great goal keeper. She’s great back there,” said Doug Cottis.
York goalie Lily Brodsky made three saves in the win.
Wells will host Fryeburg Academy on Wednesday.
