WOOLWICH — A fire engulfed a home in Woolwich this morning.

Woolwich Deputy Fire Chief Glen Kirkpatrick said they were alerted to the fire at 4:59 a.m., and the Bath Fire Department was on the scene within seven minutes. But by then the second and third story were gone and the fire had spread to a next door neighbor’s garage.
“There wasn’t anything we could do other than put water on it,” said Kirkpatrick. “We put the garage fire out and prevented that.
“It was just so hot and so heavy,” he added. “The smoke was so thick you couldn’t see anything. The wind was blowing right in our face.”
The occupants of the home, a husband and wife, were able to escape unharmed with their dog, said Kirkpatrick.

Several local fire departments responded to assist Woolwich fire fighters, including units from Bath and Brunswick. The Sagadahoc Bridge that connects Woolwich and Bath via Route 1 was temporarily closed.
The cause of the fire is still unknown. A representative of the State Fire Marshall’s Office was investigating the fire.
Kirkpatrick said the structure was completely destroyed by the fire.
“Unfortunately, it is a total loss. There isn’t anything in there to save,” he said.
By noon, the department had torn down the remains of the structure and were putting out any remaining hot spots.
