STANDISH — After winning their first two games, the Sanford boys soccer team lost the next five games. The Spartans would stop their skid on Thursday night as they picked up a 1-0 victory at Bonny Eagle.
“Tonight was huge stepping stone for us. We’ve been struggling to get the consistency and get the team bonding. We had a lot of things that we worked on in practice this week, trying to come off the last couple of losses that we had. It was good to come out, dominate and actually finally put something in the back of the net again,” said Sanford head coach Tim Fecteau.
During the first half, the Spartans (3-5) would dominate possession but had a hard time beating the Scots’ keeper.
“The first half, we were struggling to find and get through their backs,” said Fecteau.
With eight minutes left in the competition, Sanford broke open the scoreless game. Conner Curcio crossed the ball in front of the net and Nick Adornetto whammed the ball into the corner of the net to produce the final score of 1-0.
“We were working on that. We were trying to get it into the corners and then getting it through. It got lucky coming through. Nick’s been working really hard on getting the volleys down and it just happened to hit him just right and he finished it. We just got lucky,” said Fecteau.
The margin of triumph would have been much larger if it wasn’t for the incredible play of Bonny Eagle goalie Ben Atkinson. The junior stopped nine tough shots throughout the game.
“Ben is a very good kid. We have another goalie as well and they both compete every practice. Ben had an amazing game against Portland and he earned his role tonight. He’s a very modest kid so we won’t hear him brag about himself. I think with some more training he would be a force to be reckon with,” said Bonny Eagle head coach Larry Robertson.
Fecteau agreed with Robertson.
“The goalie is definitely very good, probably one of the better ones in the league,” said Fecteau.
Sanford goalie Will Kiley made three saves in the win.
Sanford will host Portland during their homecoming festivities on Tuesday.
