ALFRED — Lionel R. Landry, 89, of Alfred, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2018 at his daughter’s home in Acton, Maine with his family by his side.
Lionel was born on Jan. 4, 1929 to Joseph and Pauline (Brin) Landry in Sanford where he grew up and attended local schools. He served his country well, receiving a Purple Heart, Korean Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, A Combat Infantry Badge, a Parachute Badge and an Army of Occupation Medal (Japan). Following his term in the military Lionel spent his working life as a printer for Lincoln Press and then for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard where he was employed until he retired at the age of 62.
Lionel enjoyed the game of golf, playing cards and Nintendo. He was loved by all who knew him and will be missed dearly. Our lives will be a little less sweet without this loving, caring and generous man. Our beloved Lionel (Dad, Grampa, Nono, Pepe, Champ) showed his deep gratitude and appreciation for his family to the very end of his life here on earth with us. He also held on to his always quick wit and made us smile. See you later alligator, in a while crocodile.
Lionel was preceded in death by his wife, Maria O. Landry and his two sons, David and Christopher Landry.
He leaves behind four children, Brenda Adams and her husband Charles, Dawn Polley, Brian Landry and his wife Rhonda, Melanie Dechant and her husband Stephen as well as a step-daughter, Louisa Marega and her husband Emilio of Italy. He also leaves behind 14 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, a sister, Levina Carrette and two brothers, Roland Landry and Robert Landry and his wife Lou. Lionel and Maria’s home and hearts were always open to children including Harold Venot and many other foster kids as well as dozens of children they babysat but quickly became like family.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21 at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, located at Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home, 580 Main St. in Springvale. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 22 at St. Thérèse of Lisieux Parish, Notre Dame Church, located on Payne Street in Springvale.
In keeping with Lionel’s generous spirit, the family urges those planning an expression of sympathy to consider sending a memorial contribution to the charity of their choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral homes and Cremation Service, Sanford-Springvale.
