ALFRED — Massabesic, Biddeford, Cheverus and Westbrook distance runners all converged on Friday night to run a cross country meet through an apple orchard in Alfred — and it would be a pair of Mustangs defending their home course by finishing first.
Massabesic dominated the boys 5k race. as Jeffery Waters came home first in 17:38.94, while Jakob Saucier was second at 18:23.03 and Jesse Cadigan third at 18:24.28.
“It’s my last time here and I just really wanted to make it count. I wanted to run with my heart and I wanted to have fun. I accomplished that,” said Waters, who is a senior.
Massabesic head coach Jennifer Blair wasn’t surprised to see her time shine on Friday.
“Our boys team is working really hard together and trying to stay together during races. They’re doing a fabulous job and working hard especially on the hills,” said Blair.

Massabesic took first with a team score of 17. Biddeford was second with 68 points, while Cheverus was third with 70 and Westbrook fourth with 78.
The top finisher for the girls 5k race was from Massabesic, but a Cheverus runner was right on her heels.
Massabesic’s Kylie Johnson won the girls heat in 22:01.62, while Cheverus’s Mackenzie Turner was second at 23:10.22 and Westbrook’s Elise Bureau third at 23:30.97.
“The hills really hurt and it was really hot outside so it felt really good to win,” said Johnson.
Blair has been impressed with Johnson’s performance all year.
“The kids have been working really hard. We only have seven on the girls team but our number one is killing it right now,” said Blair.
Cheverus won the girls meet with 25 points. Massabesic was second with 55, while Westbrook (59) finished third and Biddeford (94) fourth.
Blair was impressed with all the runners as they made their way through a difficult course.
“The course is hills, hills and a few more hills. The kids have to do two laps in an apple orchard and it is painful for them. It’s tough,” said Blair.
Biddeford will host Massabesic, Gorham, Portland and South Portland on Friday.
