SACO — After only scoring once in their first three games, the Thornton Academy girls soccer team has won two games and scored five goals this week.
The Trojans (2-3) latest conquest was South Portland as Thornton Academy beat South Portland 2-1 on Friday night at Hill Stadium.
With four minutes left in the first half, Hannah Niles scored the Trojans first goal of the night. Alyanna Beaudoin kicked a long ball cross and Niles headed the ball into the net.
Six minutes into the second half, Julia Banks scored for South Portland to tie the game 1-1.
Mary Halle got the winning goal with only 10 minutes left in the second half. Halle shot from outside the 18 and the ball swooped over the keeper’s head.
South Portland goalie Maria Buck had 14 saves. Thornton goalie Grace Mears had one save in the win.
Waynflete 4, Old Orchard Beach 1
Old Orchard Beach girls soccer was defeated by Waynflete 4-1 on Friday night.
During the first half, the two teams battled across the field but neither were able to find the net.
Four minutes into the second half, Abby Shumway scored the first of her three goals.
After Shumway’s first goal, Maggie Strohm tied the game up. Strohm kicked in a goal off Riley Blatchford’s corner kick.
After Strohm’s goal, Shumway would go on a tear and score two more goals for the Flyers.
Abby Aleshire scored the final goal for Waynflete and produced the score 4-1.
Old Orchard Beach goalie Chloe Kocian made seven saves. Waynflete goalie Jesse Connors had six saves in the win.
Boys Soccer
South Portland 4, Massabesic 0
South Portland boys soccer was able to shutout Massabesic 4-0 on Friday night.
Damir Brkic scored two goals for South Portland.
Noah Preifus and Aleks Kaurin also scored goals for the Red Riots.
Massabesic goalie Caleb Smalley made nine saves. South Portland goalies Shippen Savidge and Paul Zechman made a combined five saves in the win.
Yarmouth 5, Wells 2
Wells boys soccer falls to a 0-4 record after being beaten by Yarmouth 5-2 on Friday night.
Isaac Michaud and Tucker Brown scored goals for Wells.
Jack Jones scored three goals for Yarmouth.
Eric LaBrie and Charlie Hunter also scored goals for the Clippers.
GOLF
Massabesic 11, Sanford 2
Massabesic golf overpowered Sanford 11-2 on Thursday night.
Jonah Roy, Ethan Laverriere, Garrett Gerard, Noah Chretien and Codie Fall all earned wins for Massabesic.
Zachary Bresett earned two wins for Sanford.
