RICHMOND — Both northbound lanes of Interstate 295 reopened Friday after a crash involving a camper briefly shut down the right lane for about an hour.
Maine State Police said two people from New Hampshire escaped serious injury around 8:20 a.m., when their pickup and camper overturned on Interstate 295 in Richmond.
A news release from the state police said Wilfred and Connie Dockham, of Gilmanton, New Hampshire, were driving north when the camper they were towing was struck by a tractor-trailer hauling concrete slabs and driven by Thomas Bettcher, 61, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, as it swerved into their lane while passing.
Connie Dockham, no age provided, was not injured; but Wilfred Dockham, 71, was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Bettcher did not stop immediately; he called police from the West Gardiner service plaza.
Troopers from the State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit completed a safety check of the vehicle. No charges were filed immediately.
Maine State Police posted a photo of the crash on Facebook at 8:43 a.m., with an advisory that clearing the area would take some time. An update posted at 11:11 a.m. announced both lanes were open.
