Maximo Varela scored two goals as the Mt. Ararat High School boys soccer team opened its Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference season with a 6-0 victory over Skowhegan on Friday.
Travis Nadeau tallied a goal for the Eagles in the first half as the visitors claimed a 4-0 halftime lead.
Mt. Ararat took advantage of a pair of Skowhegan own goals, and Jace Hollenbach picked up a second-half goal to complete the scoring.
Max Spelke had two assists, while Ethan Rac added a helper.
Skowhegan (0-1) goaltender Gage Mason had 14 saves, while the Indians failed to put a shot on goal.
Mt. Ararat hosts defending State Class A champion Lewiston today at 3:30 p.m.
OAK HILL 3
LISBON 1
Oak Hill scored a pair of goals in the second half Friday to pull out a Mountain Valley Conference win over Lisbon.
Nico Soucy scored on a penalty kick to give the Raiders (1-0) a 1-0 lead in the first frame. Caleb Leighton and Zac Ouellette tallied after the break to seal the win.
DJ Douglass scored the Greyhounds’ (0-1) lone goal.
Cole Whitten made five saves for Oak Hill, while Levi Levesque and Sean Moore combined to deflect seven shots for Lisbon, which hosts Mt. Abram on Friday at 4 p.m.
Field hockey
LISBON — Sophie Jacques tallied five goals to power Dirigo to a 6-0 MVC win over Lisbon on Friday.
The Greyhounds fell to 0-2 and hosts Oak Hill on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
Kailey Hackett dished out two assists in the win and added a goal.
Lisbon goaltenders Becky Budesheim and Courtney Sargent combined on 12 saves.
Dirigo finished with eight penalty corners, while Lisbon had five.
Football
WALDOBORO — Kyle Secone intercepted a Medomak Valley pass with 33 seconds remaining as Mt. Ararat held on for a 13-6 season opening victory on Saturday.
The 1-0 Eagles host Kennebunk this upcoming Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Topsham Fairgrounds.
Austin Damon gave Mt. Ararat a 6-0 lead, hauling in a 12-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Noah Blessington.
Medomak returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown to tie the game late in the first half. Damon blocked the point-after kick.
Late in the third quarter, Blessington scampered into the end zone from 18-yards out for a 13-6 lead.
In the fourth, both teams had chances, but the defenses held.
“We moved the ball between the 20s, but stalled after that,” said Mt. Ararat co-coach Matt Haskell. “The game was quick, just 102 total plays, as both teams possessed the ball well.”

FRYEBURG 14
The Greyhounds opened their season with a crossover win over Fryeburg Academy Friday afternoon.
Lisbon, 1-0 and slated to host Mountain Valley this upcoming Saturday at 1:30 p.m., scored the game’s first 22 points and last 14 after the Raiders picked up a pair of touchdowns late in the third quarter.
Lisbon quarterback Lucas Francis was 9-of-14 in the air for 117 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Running back Isaiah Thompson picked up 132 rushing yards with touchdown runs of 21, 36 and 50. Robbie Dick hauled in a touchdown pass and had 66 receiving yards. Francis chipped in a rushing touchdown.
On defense, Connor Houle had two interceptions, while the defensive line of Hunter Job, Thompson, Kane Strout and Alan Lavoie were dominant.
