A Massachusetts man was killed in a single-car crash Tuesday morning on the Maine Turnpike in Wells.
The crash was reported around 6:30 a.m. at mile 18 northbound. A man who was a passenger in the car died when it crashed near the Wells-Ogunquit town line, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
An initial investigation indicated that speed was a factor in the crash. McCausland said it appears the driver hit the median guardrail, crossed three lanes, and then slammed into a group of trees off the breakdown lane.
The passenger died at the scene and the driver, also a man, was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries.
McCausland said Tuesday night that the men were both from Brockton, Massachusetts. McCausland said state troopers spent most of the day trying to confirm the their identities, but he said their names and ages won’t be released until Wednesday morning at the earliest.
“We’re still working on getting postive IDs,” he added.
The right lane was closed for most of the morning while police reconstructed the crash. Turnpike officials warned drivers to expect delays, but lifted the advisory shortly after noon.
