BEREA, Ohio

Dez Bryant’s going to meet with the Browns. Depending on how things go, he could stay awhile.

The free agent wide receiver has scheduled a visit with Cleveland on Thursday, and the anticipated stopover could lead to the three-time Pro Bowler signing with a team craving more playmakers.

Bryant, who released by the Dallas Cowboys in April after eight seasons, has shown previous interest in joining the Browns. Last week, Bryant posted on Twitter that he intended to speak with the team and a Browns spokesman confirmed the sides will talk later this week.

But while Bryant would certainly be a talent upgrade for a team coming off a 0-16 season, Browns coach Hue Jackson said it’s vital to make sure he fits with Cleveland’s culture.

“It’s not just a given,” Jackson said following Tuesday’s practice. “I think you have to work through whatever conversations we have and feel good about it.”

Cleveland needs receiving help and receiver Jarvis Landry and quarterback Tyrod Taylor have lobbied for Bryant, who has 531 career receptions for 7,459 yards and 73 touchdowns.

But the 29-year-old Bryant has baggage, and the Browns have to be sure he’s not only committed to them, but that he won’t be a distraction. Bryant frequently clashed with Dallas coaches and he recently went on a Twitter rant criticizing former teammates.

The Browns have been in the market for another receiver since camp opened.

Former Pro Bowler Josh Gordon has been absent to focus on his health and the team doesn’t know when he’ll be back. Cleveland recently traded former first-round pick Corey Coleman to Buffalo and there are still questions about whether rookie Antonio Callaway can be counted on because of his background and recently being cited for marijuana possession and driving with a suspended license.

Bryant clearly has the talent to help the Browns, who now have to weigh the risk.

Bryant is believed to have other options, but he could be enticed to join Landry, who isn’t sure if Cleveland has enough for his friend.

“We’re just trying to figure out if he wants to be here,” Landry said. “Then obviously we’re open arms and we’d love to have him. He’d be a great addition to our team and our offense for sure.”

Bryant had 69 catches for 838 yards and six TDs last season, below his usual standards. His last 1,000-yard season was in 2014.

Steelers

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers plan to get a closer look at their two most recent draft picks at quarterback.

Rookie third-round pick Mason Rudolph and Josh Dobbs, Pittsburgh’s fourth-round selection in 2017, will see all of the playing time when the Steelers visit the Green Bay Packers for their second preseason game on Thursday.

“They’re going to play exclusively,” Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. “(We) haven’t detailed the division of labor, but those two guys will be featured.”

On Tuesday, Tomlin ruled out veterans Ben Roethlisberger and Landry Jones for the game. The announcement came before Roethlisberger left Tuesday’s training camp practice with a possible concussion.

“Ben Roethlisberger sustained a hit today in practice,” Tomlin said through a team spokesman after practice. “He is being evaluated as part of the concussion protocol.”

Roethlisberger was face down on the turf, surrounded by his teammates, after throwing a touchdown pass to JuJu Smith-Schuster during a best-of-seven competitive 2-point conversion drill between the offense and defense.

Roethlisberger was helped to his feet and sat on a water cooler with a towel over his head as practice continued. He touched his head several times and eventually walked off the field under his own power with trainers and team doctors.

Right guard Marcus Gilbert said Roethlisberger rolled out and ran into him as he blocked linebacker Keion Adams.

“It didn’t look too pretty,” Gilbert said. “But when he got up he seemed to be a little bit better. That’s my guy. I wouldn’t want to see anything happen to him, especially in a practice like this.”

Tomlin praised Roethlisberger’s work at training camp Tuesday morning.

“He’s been really sharp, not only in terms of what he does, but just how he’s communicating and helping in aiding the development of some people that are going to work alongside him,” Tomlin said. “It’s been a very positive experience.”

Rudolph and Dobbs both ended practice with touchdown passes during the two-minute drill. Rudolph, the former Oklahoma State star, said he is anxious to see additional playing time on Thursday.

“I’m going to be preparing to play well and execute our plan,” Rudolph said. “We have a great plan for Green Bay, and whenever my number’s called, I plan to go out and execute.”

Cardinals

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Even though he says he’s not paying that much attention to it, David Johnson says he’s “very encouraged” about ongoing contract talks between his agent and the Arizona Cardinals.

The standout running back held out during the team’s three-day minicamp but has been a full participant in training camp, and had a pair of impressive runs to start Saturday night’s preseason 24-17 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers.

Johnson said he believes the Cardinals and the team’s fan base know how good he is, but he believes others around the NFL may have forgotten. He’s out to remind them and prove he’s worth a big contract.

An All-Pro selection in 2016, when he led the NFL in yards from scrimmage and touchdowns, Johnson fractured his left wrist in the 2017 season opener and hadn’t played since — until those two carries against the Chargers.

Johnson, a third-round draft pick out of Northern Iowa in 2015, is set to make $1.9 million in this the fourth and final year of his rookie contract. That’s far, far below what other bigtime running backs will earn.

Eagles

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Carson Wentz expects to participate in 11-on-11 drills next week, but it’s uncertain whether he’ll be ready for the season opener.

The defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles host the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 6. Wentz’s goal since having surgery last December to repair a torn ACL and LCL in his left knee has been to be ready for that game.

“It’s no secret that it’s going to be close,” Wentz said after the Eagles completed training camp Tuesday.

The Eagles are in no rush to have their franchise quarterback return too soon. Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles is Wentz’s backup and he’s ready to step in like he did in Week 14 last season.

Pederson said he’d like for Wentz to practice for a full week before he played in a game. Wentz still hasn’t been cleared for contact.

Broncos

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos might not be done shuffling backup quarterbacks.

General manager John Elway said Tuesday that he might still sign a veteran to back up starting QB Case Keenum if he doesn’t feel Chad Kelly can win games in a pinch.

The Broncos promoted Kelly over former first-round pick, Paxton Lynch, this week following their contrasting performances in training camp and in the preseason opener last weekend, when Lynch threw for just 24 yards over seven series with the second string. Kelly had a pair of touchdowns in mop-up duty against the Minnesota Vikings.

Kelly will get plenty of work with the second stringers as the Broncos host the Chicago Bears for joint practices Wednesday and Thursday before their preseason game Saturday night in Denver.

Kelly, whose uncle in NFL Hall of Famer Jim Kelly, threw for 97 touchdowns and 29 interceptions during a collegiate career that began at Clemson (2012-13), continued at East Mississippi Junior College (2014) and finished at Ole Miss (2015- 16).

Kelly had a solid offseason and consistently outplayed Lynch, the former Memphis QB whom Elway moved up to draft in the first round in 2016 following Peyton Manning’s retirement.

Coach Vance Joseph said Tuesday that Lynch was mad and miffed over the switch .

“He is upset. He didn’t like it. He wants to know why,” Joseph said. “And he has to play better. It’s as simple as that. It’s a competition. It’s the league. Everyone’s doing this. No one’s not playing their best players.
