EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Aldrick Rosas can’t have a repeat of last season if he wants to remain the New York Giants’ place-kicker.

The 23-year-old from Southern Oregon might have been the biggest surprise of training camp last summer, making the roster as a first-year free agent. The 6-foot-3, rock-solid 233-pounder with a booming leg made almost every kick attempted in training camp to beat out veteran Mike Nugent. It was a no-brainer for then-coach Ben McAdoo and his staff.

Then came the regular season and everything went south for McAdoo, the team – and Rosas.

There were good moments: Rosas kicked in the opener at Dallas and then hitched a ride on co-owner’s Steve Tisch’s jet so he could get to California for the birth of his daughter and first child, Karsyn Isabella.

His season wasn’t pretty.

Rosas made 18 of 25 field-goal attempts. That’s 72 percent and not good enough when coaches expect their kickers to hit 80 percent.

“It’s felt like I have done five years since last summer,” Rosas said. “It’s been a ride. When you go back and reflect, it’s learning the game of football, being a professional and learning the game of life and being a Dad. I am still learning.”

New coach Pat Shurmur was hesitant to say what he expected from his kicker, although he agreed with someone with a cranky wizard-like voice from behind the podium curtain who chirped in: “Just make ’em.”

“I think it’s important,” Shurmur said. “Again, you’ve got to see it happen in game situations.

“Most often, the kickers that you have in camp make them during the practice sessions, you’ve just got to watch it happen. It’s really not that much more complicated than that.”

TITANS: Tennessee placed safety Johnathan Cyprien on injured reserve and waived injured defensive lineman Connor Flagel.

The Titans also announced that offensive tackle Laurence Gibson agreed to terms, and tight end Phillip Supernaw has passed his physical after being on the physically unable to perform list.

Cyprien tore his left ACL on Wednesday, and the Titans have been looking at potential replacements.

49ERS: There’s growing concern about Joshua Garnett’s knee injury, Coach Kyle Shanahan said, after the guard missed the last five practices of training camp.

“Josh said that he doesn’t feel right, so that’s always worrisome when a player says he doesn’t feel right,” said Shanahan.

“And I know Josh is getting a few second opinions. So waiting until our doctors talk to other people and see what conclusion they come to.”

Garnett began camp in a heated competition to start at right guard after missing all of 2017 following surgery on the same right knee last August.

The team said Garnett banged knees with a teammate July 28 and he was expected to return this week.

Part of the concern is the uncertainty surrounding the injury, which the team initially called “not significant.”

“It depends who you talk to,” Shanahan said. “That’s what we’re trying to find out and that’s what he’s trying to find out. Josh went through a lot last year with his knee.”

JETS: Linebacker Dylan Donahue received a three-month suspended sentence and was fined $1,000 for a DUI crash in his hometown of Billings, Montana.

The Billings Gazette reports Donahue pleaded guilty through his attorney and was sentenced at the same Municipal Court hearing.

Donahue was charged after hitting an abandoned vehicle in May 2017, causing his Jeep to flip. The crash happened 10 days after he was drafted.

PRO BOWL: The NFL announced that the Pro Bowl will be played Jan. 27 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, Florida. It will be televised on ESPN, ESPN Deportes and simulcast on ABC. Tickets go on sale in the fall.

LIONS: Defensive end Cornelius Washington has returned to practice.

The Lions removed Washington from the injured reserve/non-football injury list. He had 21/2 sacks in 15 games with the Lions last season, his fifth in the NFL.

The Lions also signed wide receiver Dom Williams and waived injured wide receiver Deontez Alexander.
