Camp Sunshine in Casco said it will receive a check Monday for more than $1 million from restaurant chain Tropical Smoothie Cafe, the largest single donation the camp has ever received.

The camp said in a statement Friday that the funding will go toward offering children with life-threatening illnesses and their families a free year-round retreat on the shores of Sebago Lake. Camp Sunshine said it will accept the check for $1,011,000 during a ceremony at 1 p.m. Monday at the camp, at 35 Acadia Road.

The funds will go toward sponsoring a summer oncology session and helping with family transportation assistance, the camp said. Camp Sunshine also will open the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Sports Center, a facility that will enable indoor activities such as basketball, floor hockey, volleyball, archery and rock climbing.

“Tropical Smoothie Cafe continues to blow us away with their enthusiasm for our mission at Camp Sunshine,” the camp’s executive director, Michael Katz, said in a statement. “They have raised more than $6 million for Camp Sunshine over the years, enabling us to bring more families from across the country to Camp Sunshine. We can now also use the new sports center to offer even more activities like rock climbing and archery during the winter months.”

Founded in 1984, Camp Sunshine provides retreats combining respite, recreation and support, while enabling hope and promoting joy for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families through the various stages of a child’s illness, the camp said.

Tropical Smoothie Cafe is a fast-casual restaurant chain based in Atlanta with more than 600 locations nationwide.
