OLD TOWN — The Saco Little League 8-10 year old All-Stars will play for a state championship on Sunday after the local squad picked up a 3-1 win over South Portland American this afternoon.
Saco, which fell to South Portland earlier in the tournament, needed to win today’s contest to force a winner-take-all game for the state title. The championship game is set for noon today at Old Town Little League.
Beck Edgerly tossed a complete game for Saco today with just three hits allowed and two strikeouts.
With the game tied 1-1 in the top of the fifth, Dominic Hussey smacked a double to score Brennan Tabor and give Saco the lead for good. Blake Bolduc would rip an RBI single later in the inning to score Hussey and make it 3-1.
Edgerly worked around two walks in the bottom of the fifth. The Saco pitcher then used a double play from second baseman Bolduc in the sixth to secure the victory.
Hussey and Bolduc led the Saco offense with a single, double and one RBI each. Collin Thompson had a double and one RBI. Tabor, Noah Fullerton, Trent Wilson, Colton Cross and Eli Harbour also had hits for Saco.
The Saco All-Stars started the state tournament with a 10-9 win over Lewiston. They would then roll to a 24-8 win over Hermon before falling to South Portland American on Wednesday. Saco rebounded from the loss with a 17-7 win over Lewiston on Friday to earn another shot at South Portland.
