KENNEBUNK — Habitat for Humanity of York County has received a grant of $5,000 from Saco and Biddeford Savings Institution to assist with their 29th home building project, this time in Springvale.

Habitat is in the final process of selecting a Habitat Partner Family for the Springvale Build, said Habitat for Humanity of York County’s Executive Director Amy Nucci.

She said that the Habitat for Humanity of York County organization serves hardworking, low-income families who show a demonstrated need for safe, durable housing, a willingness to partner by completing “sweat equity” in the building of their own homes or the homes of other Habitat families, and the ability to repay an affordable mortgage.

Nucci said Habitat for Humanity York County is grateful for the grant which will help members of the community working to improve their lives.

“We’re pleased to have the support of Saco & Biddeford Saving Institution. They have helped to increase access to affordable housing and promote stability for families in York County by helping to build safe, affordable, energy-efficient homes,” Nucci said. “Their employees are also actively engaged in helping to build our Habitat homes. We can’t thank them enough.”

Habitat for Humanity York County, the local affiliate of Habitat International, was incorporated in 1985 as a nonprofit builder of affordable homes in partnership with low-income families, community volunteers, and local businesses. Its mission is to work toward the elimination of poverty housing in York County and to stir the hearts and minds of others to take action on this issue.

A representative of Saco & Biddeford Savings Bank said that the company is thrilled to partner with Habitat for Humanity York County with this grant.

“We’re always happy to support Habitat for Humanity as they make it possible for hard-working families to attain their dream of home ownership,” said Jeff St. Laurent, vice president for Saco & Biddeford Savings. “We look forward to assisting with their projects each year whether through monetary donations or hands-on volunteer work with our employees.”

Nucci said that the kick-off ceremony for the Springvale build will be held during the Walk to Raise the Roof in Springvale on Sept. 15 and Habitat has many opportunities to volunteer on the build in Springvale, at the ReStore, on weatherization projects with the Keep York County Warm! program, in the Habitat office or with special events.

The Walk to Raise the Roof in Springvale and Pancake Breakfast is scheduled for Sept. 15 at the First Baptist Church of Springvale and Habitat’s First Annual Cornhole Tournament Series will open Aug. 19 at Funky Bow Brewery in Lyman and Sept. 22 at Gneiss Brewing Company in Limerick.

She said that anyone interested in participating or donating to Habitat is encouraged to call the HFHYC office at 985-4850 or visit the website at www.habitatyorkcounty.org.
