A three-vehicle crash Thursday along the Naples Causeway on Route 302 caused serious injuries to a motorcyclist who was crushed between two vehicles, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said.
The crash occurred about 1:07 p.m. when a Nissan pickup truck driven by 74-year-old Malcolm Buchanan of Casco stopped along the causeway to allow pedestrians to cross the road at a marked crosswalk.
The motorcyclist, 58-year-old Stephen Caron of Biddeford, who was behind the Nissan, also stopped for pedestrians. Caron, who was not wearing a helmet, was driving a 2018 Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
But a GMC 2500 pickup truck driven by 73-year-old Larry Huntley of Scarborough, which was behind the motorcycle, apparently did not stop, crushing the motorcyclist between the trucks.
Caron was taken first to Bridgton Hospital and then to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with serious traumatic head injuries. Caron was listed in critical condition Thursday evening at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
The crash is being reconstructed by the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, and a criminal investigation has also begun.
Speed and alcohol do not appear to have been factors in the crash.
