BIDDEFORD — Sixteen days after Pamela Webb’s pickup truck was found abandoned on the Maine Turnpike in Biddeford in 1989, her body was found 111 miles away in Franconia, New Hampshire.
Maine State Police say Webb, 32, of Winthrop, was murdered. They have not said how she died.
Monday marked the 29th anniversary of the discovery of her truck at mile 30.4, southbound on the turnpike. Police have put out the word they are looking for information about the case.
According to Maine State Police investigators, the passenger side rear tire of Webb’s 1981 Chevrolet pickup truck was flat and a spare tire was leaning against the tailgate. There were blood stains on the pavement on the passenger side of the truck — type O, the same as her parent’s, according to news stories in the Journal Tribune in July 1989.
Pamela’s dog was in the front of the truck. Police also found her handbag and Bible, along with a turnpike ticket indicating Webb entered the roadway in Augusta at 9:52 pm on July 1.
Family members told police Webb was driving to Mason, New Hampshire, to visit her boyfriend, according to the news accounts of the day. He reported her missing at 10 a.m. July 2.
A 23-mile search along the turnpike from Biddeford to York was unsuccessful and a number of people were questioned.
Then, on July 18, construction workers in Franconia found her remains in the woods near a roadside stop along old Route 3, according to Journal Tribune news stories at the time.
Family members said Webb had no known ties to Franconia, and her remains were found in an area where there were no homes.
Webb was a 1974 graduate of Winthrop High School and worked as a quality control inspector for Digital Equipment Corporation in Augusta. She lived alone in a mobile home near her parents.
In a July 1989 interview with the Journal Tribune, Pamela Webb’s mother, Virginia Webb, said she believed her daughter ‘s disappearance and death was due to a chance encounter.
“She was trying to change that tire and she saw someone that was going to help her — instead, they grabbed her,” said Virginia Webb at the time.
Police are asking anyone with information about the murder to contact the Maine State Police, Major Crimes Unit – South, 1 Game Farm Rd., Gray, ME 04039 or call them at 207-657-3030.
