“It is for freedom that Christ set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let ourselves be burdened by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1

The Cost of Freedom

This coming week we will celebrate the anniversary of our country’s independence, the day when we claimed our freedom from foreign domination. But we must remember that freedom is not free. Today we are able to worship in security and comfort because countless others paid the price. Down through history it has been the sacrifices of others that have made human progress possible, and sadly it has often required the use of violence and bloodshed. Jesus died a painful death on a cross to free us from the bondage of sin, and it is through our belief in him and his saving grace that our spirits find perfect freedom. We are blessed beyond measure. So in the midst of our celebrating perhaps we could take some time to pray for our country, for its leadership and for the welfare of all the people of this land. Pray for freedom from greed, from hatred, prejudice and arrogance. Pray for peace among the nations of the world, and give thanks to God for our precious freedom. America is founded on the motto, “In God We Trust” May we always hold fast to that.

Happy Birthday America!
