AUGUSTA — The Maine Community College System has presented Michael Oliver of Waterboro with the 2018 Peter J. DeTroy Award.
A student in York County Community College’s behavioral health studies program, Oliver serves as Student Senate President and a student representative to the College Council.
An Army veteran and cancer survivor, he is described as the type of student “who commits his all to whatever he sets out to do.”
He says he hopes to use his degree to serve homeless veterans.
The DeTroy Award celebrates the life and legacy of Peter DeTroy, a prominent Maine attorney and civic leader who believed deeply in the mission of the state’s community colleges.
The award seeks to recognize and support Maine community college students who possess many of the same personal attributes that defined Peter DeTroy’s life: leadership, generosity of spirit, a strong work ethic, intellectual curiosity, and a strong moral compass.
Each of the seven community colleges nominates students for the award which includes a $500 stipend.
