For a group of 20 middleschool age students, a local summer camp will offer a chance to immerser themselves in theater.
The Orion Performing Arts Center’s “Create-APlay” Theater/Art Day Camp will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, July 16-20. The play will be performed at 3 p.m. Friday, July 20, followed by a cast/family part.
Camp is open to all students finishing grades 5-8 in June. The deadline to register is June 29.
Participants will develop characters, write their own play together, create all the scenery, and perform the play. Half of each day will consist of theater activities — character development, scene-writing, acting skills, projecting the voice, theater games, and more. The other half of the day will be creating visual arts such as set design/ building, props, costumes, self-portraits, painting, and other art activities.
Theater Director Kathleen Nation and Art Director Christine Gates both have wide experience in the performing and visual arts fields, and have worked frequently with middle-school students.
There are some scholarships available to eligible children.
Registration brochures are available online at orionperformingartscenter.org, at Mt. Ararat Middle School at 66 Republic Ave. in Topsham, and at local libraries. For more information, contact Orion Coordinator Judy Lloyd at lloydj@link75.org or (207) 729-2950 ext. 7, or visit orionperformingartscenter.org.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
