HARPSWELL
On Tuesday, Harpswell residents will vote via referendum on a request for an additional $40,000 for the repair of the Mackerel Cove Boat Launch.
As The Times Record reported previously, the ramp has deteriorated and is in need of expansion.
“It’s just deteriorated so badly,” said Deputy Town Administrator Terri-Lynn Sawyer. “It’s also a narrow ramp — it’s only 16-feet wide — and we’re going to 20-feet wide.
At the annual town meeting in March, voters approved $60,000 in funding for the repairs, though town staff clarified at the time that they would likely be asking for more funding in the near future due to cost revisions.
“At the March town meeting, I did mention before voters voted on warrant article that we … had just found out before March town meeting that the ramp replacement had to be redesigned which would create the need for more money,” said Sawyer at a recent selectmen’s meeting. “ They still did approve that funding at the March town meeting, and I did state that we would be looking for other grant sources or coming back to voters for additional funding.”
The total cost of the project is $100,000 and, if the funding is approved, Sawyer said it could be completed in September or October.
