A motorcycle rider from Canada was killed Sunday evening when his bike left the roadway and crashed in a wooded area of Casco.
Capt. Craig C. Smith of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Gaetan Charest, 66, of Quebec.
Charest was operating a 2018 Harley Electra Glide with a group of other motorcyclists around 5:20 p.m. when he went off the road on a curve and ended up in a wooded area. Since he was riding last in the group, the other riders at first did not realize he was no longer with them.
They doubled back and were told by a local homeowner that he had driven into the woods near the intersection of Route 11 and Coffee Pond Road in Casco.
“Information provided by the group along with details gathered from the scene suggest that Charest may have had a medical event causing him to lose control of his motorcycle,” Smith said in a statement. “Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors.”
A crew from the Casco Rescue Department responded, but was unable to revive Charest.
The investigation into his death is being handled by the Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Team and the Criminal Investigation Division.
