DURHAM, N.H. — Cayden Spencer-Thompson of Mattanawcook Academy became the first Maine long jumper to surpass 24 feet and set two all-time Maine bests, and Maine athletes won six events Saturday at the New England high school track championships.

Spencer-Thompson, a junior, won the long jump at 24 feet, 1 3/4 inches – breaking the all-time Maine best of 23-5 1/2 set by Kennebunk’s David Eagleson in 1990. Spencer-Thompson then improved on his own Maine all-time best in the triple jump, taking another victory at 48-3 3/4.

Westbrook junior Nyagoa Bayak matched her own state record in the girls’ high jump with a winning height of 5-11.

Thornton Academy picked up two titles – from juniors Jason Montano in the shot put (59-2 1/2) and Travis Snyder in the pole vault (15-9). Montano was also sixth in the discus, which was won by Brewer junior Jacob McCluskey (168-1).

Cheverus freshman Victoria Bossong (56.27) and sophomore Emma Gallant (57.41) took second and fourth in the 400 meters, Darcy Cochran of Cape Elizabeth finished third in both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles (14.91 and 45.39), and Zach Westman of York placed third in the boys’ 300 hurdles (39.22).
