The ruling is in – “Legally Blonde 3” is officially in the works.
Reese Witherspoon confirmed that MGM is making a long-rumored third installment to her popular movie franchise by sharing a Twitter video that shows her floating on a pool raft while wearing her character Elle Woods’ classic pink bikini.
“It’s true … #LegallyBlonde3,” the actress captioned the eight-second clip.
Witherspoon’s confirmation comes three days after Deadline reported she was in talks to return for a third movie.
The original “Legally Blonde” premiered in 2001 and centered on Elle, the president of her Delta Nu sorority, as she enrolls at Harvard Law school in an effort to get back her former boyfriend.
The sequel “Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde” came out two years later and focused on Elle working for a congresswoman in Washington, D.C.
Witherspoon, 42, isn’t the only member of the original “Legally Blonde” team who’s been linked to the third installment. Writers Kirsten Smith and Karen McCullah were also reportedly in discussions to return after penning the screenplay for the first movie. Despite the long gap between the last “Legally Blonde” film and the upcoming third flick, the franchise has remained popular in part because of the musical by the same name that debuted on Broadway in 2007 and has gone on multiple tours in the years since.
