This month, thousands of young Mainers are making one of life’s great transitions at high school graduations across the state. For this annual feature, we sought out seniors who, because of heart, talent or toughness, are likely to make a difference in the world.
Here are the stories of 10 outstanding members of the class of 2018 and their journeys so far. They include several immigrants and top scholars, a few social activists, a champion swimmer, a good Samaritan and a math prodigy who plays a mean jazz piano.
They have overcome language barriers, learning disabilities, everyday teen insecurities, crippling rejection and chronic illnesses. Their intended careers include medicine, law, acting, international relations, community organizing, environmental protection and plumbing.
They have already accomplished so much and they’re on track to do lot more.
