Former President George H.W. Bush was in “good spirits” on Wednesday but was likely to remain at a Biddeford hospital for several more days as he undergoes treatment for low blood pressure, according to a spokesman.
Bush, 93, has been at Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford since Sunday after experiencing fatigue and low blood pressure while staying at his family’s estate in Kennebunkport. In an update released Wednesday afternoon, Bush family spokesman James McGrath said the former president continues to receive medical care.
“President @GeorgeHWBush continues to be talkative and in good spirits as doctors @SMHCHealth address his blood pressure,” McGrath wrote in a Twitter post. “Those treatments are expected to take several more days.”
Bush arrived at his family’s summer home on May 20 for the first time after the death of his wife of 73 years, Barbara Bush, in April. He also spent 13 days in the hospital after his wife’s death receiving treatment for an infection that had spread to his blood.
On Monday, Bush said he was disappointed to have missed Kennebunkport’s annual Memorial Day parade.
“Very much regret missing the Memorial Day parade today in Kennebunkport, and am forever grateful not only to those patriots who made the ultimate sacrifice for our Nation – but also the Gold Star families whose heritage is imbued with their honor and heroism,” Bush said in a Twitter post.
Although he missed the parade, the former president did make it to the Kennebunkport American Legion Post 159 pancake breakfast. Photos of the event depict Bush and his former National Security Advisor Gen. Brent Scowcroft with several local veterans.
