PORTLAND — The Maine Principals’ Association singles tennis tournament kicked off on Friday at Deering Oaks Park in Portland and three local players are still alive heading into the second day.
Kennebunk/Wells’ Rosemary Campanella and Grace Campanella are the top two seeds in the girls tournament and both standouts dominated their only match on Friday.
Rosemary Campanella took down Lincoln Academy’s Fiona Liang 6-0, 6-1, while her younger sister cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ellsworth’s Miriam Nelson in the second round on Friday.
Thornton Academy’s Emma Nassif picked up a 7-5, 2-6, 1-0 (7) win in the opening round before falling to Gorham’s Jocelyn Bolt in the second round.
On the boys’ side of things, Kennebunk/Wells’ Declan Archer was leading Portland’s Dana Hinchliffe 6-2, 1-0 before their second-round match was suspended due to darkness.
TA’s Caleb Richard fell to York’s Dinon Huges in the opening round on Friday.
The tournament will continue indoors today at The Racket and Fitness Center in Portland due to the forecasted rain in the area.
