* In 1993, singer-songwriter Elvis Costello invited the Brodsky Quartet to create a song cycle with each song taking the form of a letter – a love letter, a letter home from war, a plea from a child to his divorcing parents, an old woman writing her relatives out of her will. The collaboration between the rock musician and the classical quartet resulted in wonderful music, full of amazing characters and a lauded CD, “The Juliet Letters.” Widely revered, the music is rarely performed, but a group of local musicians that calls itself the Rose Quintet is reviving the music and will present it live at Space Gallery on June 9.
The Rose Quintet includes Joseph Boucher on vocals, Dean Stein and Caroline Cornish on violins, Julia Adams on viola and Kevin Oates on cello. As a side business to his work as concert manager with the Portland Symphony Orchestra, Boucher creates orchestral pop concerts. He’s been performing “Piano Men – The Music of Elton and Billy” since 2011 and in 2016 premiered “Classic Rock” with the PSO. He’s producing the Rose Quintet as a side project to his side project. ” ‘The Juliet Letters’ exists in between the worlds of classical and pop in a very unique space,” Boucher said. ” ‘Eleanor Rigby’ by the Beatles is really the closest comparison.”
Stein and Adams perform with the Portland String Quartet; Cornish, a former TV news host, plays with the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra; and Oates is director of the Maine Youth Rock Orchestra.
In addition to the concert at Space on June 9, the Rose Quintet will perform Aug. 11 at Deertrees Theatre in Harrison.
