This past January, I spent a day in Augusta learning about our state Legislature.

Democratic state Rep. Janice Cooper of Yarmouth, who represents my town, immediately approached me when she learned that I am a student at Yarmouth High School.

She has been serving in the Legislature for six years, and has spent that time taking on tough issues that will benefit her constituents and the state. I am especially impressed that she has not been afraid to work on gun control laws to protect me and all students in the state. This is not a new commitment; she has been fighting for the safety of students for many years, and we need someone with this kind of courage and record.

She gets it that we should not be afraid to go to school.
