BRUNSWICK

There will be no St. John’s Bazaar this year, due to construction taking place at the St. John’s Catholic School campus.

A Brunswick staple every June for more than 40 years, the fundraiser supported St. John the Baptist Church. The event raised an annual average of $20,000, though profits have ranged from $14,000 to $50,000, according to Charleen Foley, All Saints Parish business coordinator

Proceeds have been declining over the past few years, however, as have the number of volunteers running the event.

It is unclear whether the bazaar will be able to continue in future years once a new, 15,000-square-foot multipurpose building is built on the site. The parish may also find another way to raise the money the bazaar once generated.

“I think we’re studying our options, given that we’re not sure if we have a volunteer committee for the bazaar to continue,” said Foley, “and will this new fundraiser do what we want it to do to take the place.”

The bazaar was a community event, she said, “and we wanted to do something more for the community than ourselves.”

The Friday portion of weekend-long event was community day and always one of the best attended.

The parish had budgeted raising $18,000 this year from the bazaar. Instead, it will be promote a fundraiser through the summer, Foley said. The parish may look to do some kind of fundraiser for the community that incorporates the new building, which will include a gymnasium, stage, meeting room and kitchen.

Smokey’s Greater Shows, which has set up carnival rides at the bazaar, will be at the Topsham Fairgrounds for a carnival unrelated to St. John’s or the parish. Smokey’s Greater Shows Spring Carnival will remain open until May 28 with daily ride specials, games and food. Admission is free and the carnival opens daily at 5 p.m. and at noon on Saturday and Sunday.
