
The Bowdoin College men’s tennis team advanced to the Elite Eight for the third straight year after defeating RPI, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon.
With the victory, Bowdoin tied the school record for single season wins (21) and advanced to their third consecutive national quarterfinal appearance.
Bowdoin took a 2-1 lead after doubles. The No. 2 duo of Kyle Wolfe/Yangeng (Jerry) Jiang and Gil Roddy/Larry Zhao at No. 3 posted 8-5 wins.
Roddy won the first singles point for the Polar Bears at No. 5 (6-2, 6-0). Jiang (6-0, 6-2) at No. 4 finished just a minute before Grant Urken (6-2, 6-3) clinched the match at No. 1.
The Polar Bears were up a set on all the remaining courts.
On Friday, the Polar Bears rolled to a 5-0 win over Yeshiva University.
Bowdoin swept doubles play, paced by No. 2 Wolfe/Jiang (8-0). Roddy/Zhao went 8-1 at No. 3, while No. 1 Luke Tercek/Urken (8-3) earned the final point.
Roddy earned the fourth point of the day at No. 5 singles (6-0, 6-0). Tercek clinched the match at No. 2 (6-1, 6-1).
Every other Bowdoin player was up a set on the remaining courts.
The Polar Bears will face the winner of Washington University–St. Louis and Kenyon in the Division III quarterfinals on May 21 in Claremont, California.
Women’s lacrosse
Bowdoin took command in the second half of an 18-8 victory over Stevens Institute of Technology in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Sunday afternoon at Ryan Field.
The Polar Bears (14-5) advanced to the third round where they will face The College of New Jersey on Saturday.
Stevens (14-6) finished its year after making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2011.
The teams traded goals in a tightly-played first half. Stevens scored the first goal of the game, off the stick of Cami Santor, and got consecutive scores from Kyra Bednarski and Emily Shanklin to hold a 3-2 edge less than 10 minutes into the contest.
Hannah Hirschfeld sparked a 3-0 Bowdoin run with a man-down goal at 17:37, giving the hosts a 5-3 advantage with under 10 minutes left in the half. Stevens trimmed the lead to a single goal on two occasions late in the period, but Bowdoin rolled off back-to-back goals from Eliza Denious and Alexandra Logan to take an 8-5 lead at halftime.
The Ducks stayed within striking distance early in the second half, cutting the Polar Bear lead to two goals, the second of which came off a Hannah Condren goal that made it 9-7 with 20:41 to go.
The Polar Bears exploded for eight straight goals in a span of 10:45 to put the game into running time. Elizabeth Growney sparked the run with a goal and two assists to quickly push the lead to 12-7. Katie Miller put home back-to-back goals to make it 14-7. When Hirschfeld scored with 7:37 remaining for Bowdoin, the Polar Bears held a 17-7 lead, putting the game out of reach.
Denious paced Bowdoin with a four-goal effort, while Hirschfeld (three goals, two assists) and Elizabeth Growney (two goals, three assists) had five-point days. Allison Williams had five draw controls, while Kara Finnerty had four ground balls and three draw controls for the Polar Bears.
Bednarski scored four goals for Stevens, who also got two goals from Santor.
