BIDDEFORD  — The president of Volk Packaging Corporation is seeking submissions for a memorial wall honoring veterans.

Derek Volk was traveling with his wife, Amy, when he got the idea to build a memorial to honor veterans.

“We were driving through the little town of Abbot, Maine and in the center of the town they had this beautiful war memorial,” said Volk in a written statement. “The memorial listed all of the soldiers and sailors from Abbot who had ever served, and I thought – why doesn’t every town have one of these.”

Volk then heard about the memorial wall in Portland on the wharf near DiMillo’s restaurant. He visited the wall and liked the “simple but beautiful design” and decided he’d like to have a similar wall built in Biddeford.

The Volk Packaging Heroes Wall will be built at the company headquarters at 11 Morin St. to honor those who have served, or are currently serving, in the armed forces of the United States.

The wall will be decorated with 8.5 by 11 inch tiles made of black and gray granite. Those who want to honor a loved one can purchase a tile and submit a photo and a write up to be put on the tile. The cost per tile is $150. A portion of the fee will cover the cost of etching and the remaining funds will be donated to the VFW Post 7997.

Donations can also be made to sponsor others who can’t afford a title but would like to honor a loved one.

Those interested in honoring someone who has served can contact Volk Packaging through the company’s website at www.volkboxes.com/about-volk/in-the-armed-forces or through Facebook at www.facebook.com/VPCHeroesWall.

A public ribbon cutting for the wall has been tentatively set for 3 p.m. on June 6.
