BASEBALL
Steady rain forced the postponement of the Portland Sea Dogs’ game against the Reading Fightin Phils Friday night at Hadlock Field.
The game will be made up May 26 as part of a doubleheader.
Portland (6-12) will try to snap a five-game losing streak at 1 p.m. Saturday against Reading (8-12). The homestand continues through Wednesday.
Saturday’s scheduled pitchers are Dedgar Jimenez (0-2, 5.40) for the Sea Dogs and Elniery Garcia (0-1, 9.53) for Reading.
GOLF
PGA: Michael Kim and Andrew Putnam teamed to shoot a 3-under 69 to take the Zurich Classic lead into the weekend at Avondale, Louisiana.
The format switched to alternate shot for the second round, with one player hitting the tee shots on even-numbered holes and the other on odd numbers.
Kevin Kisner and Scott Brown were a stroke back after a 70.
LPGA: Jessica Korda shot a 5-under 67 in warmer-but-still-chilly conditions at Lake Merced to take a one-stroke into the weekend at Daly City, California.
Monday qualifier Annie Park was second after a 66 in the morning.
EUROPEAN TOUR: Matt Wallace shot a 2-under 70 to take a one-stroke lead into the third round of the China Open at Beijing.
Tied for second were Kim Sihwan, Nacho Elvira and Jason Scrivener.
TENNIS
BARCELONA OPEN: Rafael Nadal defeated Martin Klizan 6-0, 7-5 to extend his winning streak on clay to reach the semifinals.
Nadal started well but needed to save three set points to close out the match for his 17th straight victory on clay.
Nadal will next face David Goffin, who defeated Roberto Bautista Agut 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-2. .
In the other semifinal, Pablo Carreno Busta – who defeated second-seeded Grigor Dimitrov 6-3, 7-6 (4) – will play against Stefanos Tsitsipas, who got past third-seeded Dominic Thiem 6-3, 6-2.
OLYMPICS
WHITE HOUSE: President Donald Trump welcomed Team USA Olympic athletes to the White House, congratulating them on representing the U.S. at the 2018 Winter games.
“You made us very proud,” Trump said to the rows of young men and women standing on the White House’s north portico in matching windbreakers. “You overcame setbacks, you powered through obstacles. And I will tell you this, because of your hard work and your sacrifice, you were given the greatest honor in sports: to represent the United States as an Olympic athlete.”
Several of the Games’ biggest names were missing, including figure skater Adam Rippon, a champion of gay rights.
Some had said they had competing commitments. But others made clear they were boycotting in protest.
The White House did not immediately release a list of who attended and who didn’t, but USOC spokesman Mark Jones said the attendance numbers this year were similar to 2014.
DOPING
DECATHLON: Russian decathlete Alexander Pogorelov has been stripped of his bronze medal from the 2009 world championships after a retested doping sample came back positive.
Pogorelov had already been disqualified from the 2008 Olympics.
