BRUNSWICK

Lesser known historical features around Brunswick, Harpswell and Topsham are the focus of Pejepscot Historical Society’s second annual Hidden History Tour on Saturday, May 19, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The family-friendly, half-day community event features a self-guided tour of 12 rarely seen historic sites — some with very unusual stories — around Brunswick, Topsham and Harpswell.

“This year’s tour includes some incredible hidden treasures that few members of the public know are in their midst,” historical society Executive Director Larissa Vigue Picard said in a press release. “For example, one site is being referred to as ‘something out of an Indiana Jones’ movie. We’ve got a diverse combination of stops including historical features, objects, oddities that a wide range of ages will enjoy.”

The 12 stops on the tour will remain a secret until the morning of the event, and will be revealed at 8 a.m. in front of the PHS building at 159 Park Row. Maps, to be stamped at each site, are provided, along with simple scavenger hunts for children. Each child, ages 6-16, receive a cap for participating. Refreshments will be donated by Mr. Bagel.

Participants are expected to spend no more than 15-20 minutes at each site, which remain open until 2 p.m. While a few sites are within walking distance of one another, others require a car ride. Instead of full tours of each site, the focus is on a special feature. The tour takes place rain or shine.

Participants may return to the society until 2:30 p.m. with stamps on their map from at least eight sites to claim two free admission tickets to historic house museums to use during the 2017 season. Children will be given a prize for a participating in the scavenger hunt. In addition, all ticket holders will be entered into a drawing for a raffle prize of products from the museum shop, including historic prints of Brunswick, Topsham and Harpswell. The drawing takes place at 2 p.m.

Advance tickets for the tour are $10 for Pejepscot Historical Society members, $15 general admission, and $5 for children (ages 6-16). In addition, the society is offering a special on new memberships in conjunction with a ticket purchase: $10 off Individual Membership or $15 off Household Membership. Tickets can also be purchased the morning of the event at the society: $12 for members, $17 general admission, $8 children. For more information, visit pejepscothistorical.org/events.
