GIRLS
Jocelyn Bolt, Gorham sophomore: Unseeded in the state singles tournament, Bolt advanced to the Round of 32 with a three-set victory over Katie Gilman of Cape Elizabeth before falling in another three-setter to Crystal Bell of John Bapst. In team play, Bolt helped the Rams to a 12-2 record in Class A South.
Grace Campanella, Kennebunk/Wells sophomore: As the fifth seed in the state singles tournament, Campanella cruised to the semifinals before falling to top seed and eventual champ Lana Mavor of Yarmouth. By winning a challenge match against her older sister this spring, Grace will rise to No. 1 singles for the Kennebunk/Wells co-op team.
Rosemary Campanella, Kennebunk/Wells senior: A two-time finalist in the singles state tournament, Campanella led the Kennebunk/Wells co-op team to its first tournament berth last spring at No. 1 singles.
Izzy Evans, Greely senior: The fourth seed in the state singles tournament last year, Evans is a two-time quarterfinalist. She was seeded fifth as a freshman before spending her sophomore spring in Spain. At No. 1 singles, Evans went 9-4 to help the Rangers to the Class B state title.
Paige Evans, Greely sophomore: Evans compiled a 12-3 record at No. 3 singles to help the Rangers to a 15-1 season and the Class B state championship with a 3-2 win over Caribou after surviving another 3-2 match against Cape Elizabeth in the regional semifinals.
Katie Gilman, Cape Elizabeth senior: After two regular-season losses, Gilman beat Greely’s Kathryn Pare in straight sets in the Class B South semifinals to bring the Capers within a match point of an upset before the Rangers pulled out a 3-2 victory.
Emily Harris, Lincoln Academy junior: Seeded 12th in the state singles tournament, Harris advanced to the Round of 16 before falling to No. 5 Grace Campanella. In team competition, Harris led the Eagles to an 11-3 record and the second seed in Class B South, where No. 6 Yarmouth ended Lincoln’s season with a 4-1 victory.
Meredith Kelley, Falmouth sophomore: After going 11-3 last spring at No. 2 singles to help Falmouth win a 10th straight state title, Kelley moves up to No. 1. Unseeded in the singles tournament, Kelley knocked off No. 11 Katrina Mason of Carrabec to reach the Round of 16 before falling in three sets to No. 6 Kira Wolpow of Brunswick.
Emma Nassif, Thornton Academy senior: Playing at No. 2 singles behind Eva Sachs, Nassif won all her regular-season matches to help the Trojans to a 14-1 season and the top seed in Class A South, ending with a regional final loss to Falmouth in which Nassif extended Meredith Kelley to 6-4, 6-4. Nassif moves up to No. 1 singles.
Lauren Paradise, Portland junior: Paradise helped the Bulldogs to a 9-5 record and a sixth seed in the Class A South tournament, which ended in a shutout loss to No. 3 Gorham. Unseeded in the state singles tournament, she advanced to the Round of 32 before falling to No. 12 Emily Harris of Lincoln Academy.
BOYS
Declan Archer, Kennebunk sophomore: As a freshman, Archer compiled a record of 10-2 for a team that only won two matches. Unseeded in the state singles tournament, he advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to eventual runner-up Nick Forester of Falmouth.
Quinn Clarke, Portland senior: The only player returning from a singles lineup that helped the Bulldogs to an 11-1 record and Class A South semifinal appearance, Clarke moves up from No. 2 to No. 1. In the state singles tournament, he advanced to the Round of 32 before falling to No. 7 Matthew Jarmusz of Morse.
Nick Forester, Falmouth junior: Known for hitting forehands off both wings, Forester was runner-up in the state singles tournament and the top player in Falmouth’s unbeaten run to the Class A state championship. He reached the singles semifinals as a freshman before stepping on a ball and injuring his knee.
Jacob Greene, Waynflete senior: Playing No. 3 singles on a deep team, Greene helped the Flyers win their 10th consecutive Class C state title. Unseeded in the singles state tournament, he knocked off No. 9 Fynn Frenzel of Bonny Eagle before losing 6-3, 7-5 to No. 8 Cole Ouellette of Lewiston in the Round of 16.
Thorne Kieffer, Waynflete junior: At No. 2 singles, Kieffer helped Waynflete win the Class C state title for a 10th straight spring. He reached the Round of 32 in the singles tournament before falling 6-2, 6-1 to No. 3 Nick Forester. Kieffer is ranked third by the USTA among 18-and-under boys in Maine.
Alex Klemperer, Falmouth senior: Playing No. 2, Klemperer came up with the only singles victory in his team’s 3-2 decision over top-seeded and defending champion Thornton Academy in the Class A South final, setting the stage for a 5-0 shutout over Lewiston in the state final.
Peter Mao, Mr. Ararat senior: A quarterfinalist as a sophomore, Mao battled tendinitis in his wrist last spring and had to withdraw as the sixth seed in his Round-of-32 match. He was 15-1 at No. 2 singles two years ago, but only 3-0 last spring playing behind state champion Nick Mathieu.
Matthew Ray, Falmouth freshman: The younger brother of a two-time singles quarterfinalist, Ray is ranked second by the USTA among 16-and-under boys from Maine, behind Mt. Ararat freshman Nathan Mao, who decided against playing high school tennis this spring.
Aiden Treutel, Cheverus sophomore: As a freshman, Treutel played No. 2 for the Stags and went 10-2 in the regular season. In the state singles tournament, he advanced to the Round of 32 before running into top seed and eventual champion Nick Mathieu of Mt. Ararat. Treutel moves up to No. 1 this spring.
Junxi (Jack) Xiao, Thornton Academy senior: When the Trojans won the 2016 Class A state title, Xiao played No. 3 singles and advanced to the Round of 32 in the state singles tournament. Last year he battled injuries, went 8-0 at No. 3 singles and also played some doubles. He won a point in the season’s only loss, 3-2 to Falmouth in the Class A South final.
