ARUNDEL — The Landing School will launch a new era this summer with the transition to a new Ppresident.
After a successful four-year term, Dr. Richard Schuhmann, president of The Landing School in Arundel, has chosen to leave the school at the end of his contract on June 30. He will be returning to the kind of work that he finds most rewarding – science and engineering – which will also allow him to spend more time with family and friends.
Dr. Schuhmann led The Landing School through some significant and innovative improvements geared towards better preparing students for careers in the marine and other industries.
Some of these include innovations in the development and application of composite boat-building materials and techniques and initiatives in teaching sustainable and low carbon impact marine practices that are embodied in a Green Lobster Boat* and the Arundel 19 carbon neutral center console.
Other innovations are the integration of leading edge technologies such as CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining and 3-D printing into the curriculum and the construction of an “Innovation Loft” where students learn to use and apply these technologies.
These innovations will be on display for press, educators, industry partners and prospective students during the upcoming Open Houses at The Landing School on April 19 and April 26 and the annual “Epic Launch” in Kennebunkport on May 11.
The Landing School Board of Trustees, faculty and staff are working together to ensure both a successful transition and a bright future for the facility and a search committee has been formed to select the next leader for the school.
“We are very proud of our school and greatly appreciate Dr. Schuhmann’s contributions.” said Haven Ladd, Chairman of The Landing School’s Board of Trustees. “With the quality of our programming, the expertise of our teachers and the enthusiasm of our students, we continue to be excited about the future of the School and the marine industry.”
Now in its 40th year, The Landing School has been effectively preparing men and women for careers in the marine industry as practical designers, builders and systems technicians who work professionally on today’s vessels.
Landing School graduates adapt to the industry’s evolving technology and appreciate the traditions of the past while imagining and building the boats of the future.
