TOPSHAM — Central Maine Healthcare on March 22 announced plans to open an outpatient care center, which it calls the first of its kind in Maine, in July.

The Topsham Care Center, which will also include New England Cancer Specialists and Shields Health Care Group, will fill a 44,000-square-foot space at 105 Topsham Fair Mall Road, next to Buffalo Wild Wings.

The center replaces Best Buy and Dollar Tree. Dollar Tree has moved to space at 131 Topsham Fair Mall Road, vacated in October 2016 by Bed, Bath & Beyond. Best Buy was closed later that month.

The center will provide added access to urgent care, cancer care, lab services and high-quality imaging, all under one roof.

It will also “offer a unique patient experience at a lower cost structure than what patients would experience in an inpatient setting,” according to a CMH press release. “Rotating clinics will provide a range of specialty care services, allowing patients to access the specialty care they need closer to home.”

The operation will kick off a network of outpatient centers for the CMH system, which includes inpatient services provided by Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Bridgton Hospital and Rumford Hospital.

The facility will offer specialty care services with nine exam rooms, urgent care with six exam rooms, various imaging services, a 5,600-square-foot atrium, and a community room for educational programs and events.

Cancer services include 14 exam rooms, 16 infusion chairs with cubicles for privacy, a garden reflection area, mental health counseling, and naturopathy and acupuncture.

John Shattuck, Topsham’s economic and community development director, praised the new development in January.

“Not only is it a plus to re-establish a premier tenancy in an area where we had lost tenants, but I think it speaks very well for the flexibility in future development of the mall in terms of mixed uses being compatible in an area that’s built to accommodate quick access and high traffic,” he said.
