Massabesic High is looking for a new football coach after Brooks Bowen decided earlier this month to resign after three seasons.
Bowen will continue to coach the Massabesic girls’ lacrosse team, which is coming off a 16-0 season and its third Class A title since Bowen and assistant Jason Tremblay started the program in 2004.
It was hoped Bowen could have similar success bringing back the football program. He had experience as an assistant coach at Bonny Eagle (two stints), Scarborough and Massabesic.
But with a relatively small roster and playing in the tough Class A South, Massabesic went 1-7, 0-8 and 2-6 under Bowen.
There were signs of improvement last season, particularly when Massabesic closed the season with consecutive last-minute victories against Bangor (21-14) and Deering (25-22).
“We had two wins last year, the last two games of the season, and were winless the year before. With the numbers and such improving, I think we’re moving in the right direction,” said Athletic Director Brendan Scully.
Of the 43 players listed on Massabesic’s 2017 roster, six were seniors.
The vacant position has been posted. Scully said he’s already received applications and would like to have the position filled prior to the April vacation week.
ADAM SMITH has stepped down as the boys’ basketball coach at Yarmouth, according to WMTW Channel 8.
Smith coached the Clippers for 14 seasons, compiling a record of 181-97 and guiding the team to the Class B state championship in 2012. Smith also coached for Central Aroostook and Penquis, and has surpassed 200 wins for his career.
