BIDDEFORD — The YMCA of Southern Maine’s child care center has been awarded a two-year grant totaling $17,000 from United Way of York County.
The early childhood program, with locations on Enterprise Drive and Pomerleau Street, provides a nurturing and supportive learning environment for 88 children in six classrooms.
The full-day program includes activities designed to support academic, physical, and emotional development. Children in the program work on social service projects, are given healthy snacks and participate in developmentally appropriate STEM (science, technology, math and engineering) lessons. Children in the preschool and pre-Kindergarten classes attend weekly swim lessons.
“The Y is here to serve the needs of the community,” said Helen Breña, CEO of the YMCA of Southern Maine. “We know that when young children are provided early support in academic, emotional and physical development in a preschool setting, they are better prepared for school, and for life.”
Through the mobilization of resources and expertise, United Way of York County advances the common good and strengthens the whole community. Thanks to the continued support of dedicated individuals, businesses, and organizations throughout York County, this year the United Way is investing in 59 community programs that serve children, youth, adults, and families.
“These important programs support the best start for our youngest citizens, provide healthy foods for children and seniors, engage youth in meaningful service, and meet basic needs, all critical components of our collective efforts to build an even stronger York County,” said United Way of York County President and CEO Barb Wentworth.
The YMCA of Southern Maine is nonprofit organization committed to building strong kids, individuals, families, and communities through programs and services that promote a healthy spirit, mind, and body for all, regardless of ability to pay.
The YMCA of Southern Maine serves more than 30,000 individuals a year at its four branches, seven before-and-after-school sites, five camps, and child care center. Last year, the YMCA of Southern Maine provided more than $2.1 million in financial assistance to 10,000 youth, individuals, and families to ensure community access to all YMCA programs.
