CAPE ELIZABETH – Some houses are updated, and some are fully updated. This dormered Cape is definitely one of the latter: In the past five years, a host of improvements has been carried out.

They are practical – for example, the new Weil-McLain boiler, the metal roof, the vinyl-shingles siding, the windows, the electric and the plumbing.

They are lifestyle-enhancing – as in the 32-foot-by-16-foot inground pool in the stockade-fenced portion of the 0.34-acre lot’s big back yard, the gravel patio and the new decking. Direct southern exposure and being wired for sound effectively render this area a ready-made entertaining complex. The house is wired for sound, too.

They are aesthetic. Note the kitchen’s beadboard, and its cool backsplashes with marine-life themed accents; its granite counters, and its new slate-grey GE appliances, including the French door refrigerator. The Corian vanities in both the first-floor and the master bath are a rich, lovely blue; the showers’ bases, a pretty pebble tile.

And of course, the above-named advantages are combined in many touches – the gleaming new maple in the living room; the attractive ceramic tile in the “mud” room; the handsome cast-iron, super-efficient pellet stove insert. Original features are just as pleasing – see the Douglas fir floor of the kitchen and the period-character mantel, brick and tile of the living room fireplace.

Upstairs are two large bedrooms (one is part of the master suite, which has a full bath) and a cedar closet in the hall. On the main floor, behind French doors from the front-to-back living room, is a carpeted den/sun room/office that makes a fine third bedroom.

The basement level is mostly daylight, provides plenty of storage, and has an applianced laundry room and a heated bonus room for exercise or other uses.
