Maine State Police said they will continue to investigate the death of a Bowdoinham woman who was found seriously injured inside her mobile home Monday but have concluded that there is no threat to the public.
Beulah “Marie” Sylvester, 55, was “unresponsive” when deputies arrived Monday morning at her mobile home on Post Road in Bowdoinham, a state police spokesman said. It was not known who alerted police, but the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the initial call was that Sylvester had a heart attack. Her injuries, though, were more severe than that and police initially investigated them as an aggravated assault.
Sylvester was taken by ambulance to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick and then transferred to Maine Medical Center in Portland, but died overnight.
Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said an autopsy was conducted at the state medical examiner’s office in Augusta on Tuesday but “additional work remains to be completed before final conclusions are reached” about the cause and manner of her death.
Detectives spent much of Tuesday inside Sylvester’s home gathering evidence, but McCausland didn’t discuss details. It’s not clear whether the woman lived alone.
“At this point, we’re still trying to determine what happened and how she was injured,” McCausland said.
