The Bowdoin College women’s basketball team has earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament and will host an NCAA First/Second Round regional at Morrell Gymnasium this Friday and Saturday.

The Polar Bears (24-2) are ranked fifth in the latest WBCA Division III poll and will play Husson in the first round on Friday evening.

The other first round match-up will feature Skidmore and FDU-Florham.

The winners of Friday’s games will meet in the second round on Saturday evening.

Game times and ticket information will be announced today.

One of the most storied programs in Division III women’s basketball history, Bowdoin will be making its 18th NCAA Tournament appearance — the most of any NESCAC school. The Polar Bears have missed just one NCAA Tournament since 2000 and have advanced to the “Sweet Sixteen” on 11 occasions.

Men’s squash

Bowdoin sophomore Tyler Shonrock rallied from two sets down to take a dramatic 3-2 victory and propel the Polar Bears to a 5-4 win over Hobart in the finals of the Conroy Cup Division of College Squash Nationals on Sunday afternoon at Trinity College.

The Polar Bears (8-11) finished the year 25th in the nation and claimed their first divisional crown at nationals since winning the Summers Cup at the 2011 CSA Tournament.

The Polar Bears received a trio of 3-0 wins to help their cause against the Statesmen, winning at No. 3 from George Cooley, No. 7 from Drew Clark and No. 9 from Arjun Dravid. Cal Fullerton was able to rally from an early deficit to take a 3-1 (8-11, 14-12, 11-7, 11-5) win to give Bowdoin their fourth point.

With the match tied at 4-4 and all other action completed, Shonrock and Divine Wing were left to decide the crown. Wing took an early lead thanks to 11-8, 11-7 wins in the first two sets. Shonrock rallied, claiming 11-9, 11-9 wins to knot the match. From there, Shonrock dominated the fifth, taking an impressive 11-2 win to give Bowdoin the Cup.

Bowdoin survived a scare from Wesleyan in the opening round on Friday afternoon before claiming a 5-4 victory.

Bowdoin earned a pair of 3- 0 wins against the Cardinals, including victories from Cooley at No. 2 and Clark at No. 6. Gannon Leech and Uday Khanna took 3-1 wins at spots No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, to help the Polar Bears to the win.

In what proved to be the difference making match, Arjun Dravid took a key 3-2 win (11- 9, 11-6, 9-11, 10-12, 11-8) at No. 8 to put Bowdoin over the top.

The Polar Bears earned an impressive 7-2 win over Haverford in the semifinals on Saturday.

Bowdoin got off to a strong start and pulled out some close matches to seal the win against Haverford. Bowdoin got 3-0 sweeps from Khanna, Clark and Dravid in the victory.

The Polar Bears also received 3-1 triumphs at the top two spots in the ladder from Satya Butler and Cooley. Gannon Leech and Cal Fullerton both claimed hard-fought 3-2 wins to round out the Bowdoin victors.

Squiers

Bowdoin men’s squash junior Ian Squiers has been named First Team All-New England Small College Athletic Conference in awards handed out by the league on Thursday.

It is the first First Team selection for Squiers, who has been named Second Team in each of his first two seasons.

Playing at the No. 1 position this winter, he has accumulated a 5-8 overall record. He is Bowdoin’s first First Team All-NESCAC recipient since Stephan Danyluk in 2014.

Backed by numerous top finishes, Bowdoin enjoyed a successful weekend at the Maine Open hosted by the University of Southern Maine.

In the men’s meet, Bowdoin claimed two individual wins and two relay victories. The top performance of the weekend for the Polar Bears belonged to the distance medley relay team of Ben Torda, John Kennealy, Conor Donahue and Sean MacDonald, who established a USM Field House record with a winning time of 10:04.09. John Pietro won the shot put with a distance of 49-11.25 to take first place, while Dylan Welch won the 600-meter run in a time of 1:23.9.

The women’s 4 x 400 relay team of Eleanor Brakewood, Sadie Saxton, Julia Zitzmann and Angela Wunderlich also earned a win, taking first by over 13 seconds in 4:23.39. Wunderlich (200) and Saxton (1,000) also took third-place showings in their respective events for the Polar Bear women, while Liam Nicoll (800) and Vincent Dong (one mile) took third-place finishes for the Bowdoin men.

The Polar Bears are entering the homestretch of the season and will compete in their final regular-season meet prior to NCAA’s on Saturday at the Tufts University Invitational.
