SOUTH PORTLAND — A Standish man was charged Tuesday when the Southern Maine Regional SWAT team Tuesday executed a high-risk search warrant at the Maine Motel.

Nobody was injured in the incident, during which four people were arrested in connection with a raft of charges, according to a press release from South Portland Police Department.

Following the investigation, which is continuing and is a joint effort by the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency and the South Portland Police Department, Freddie Mejias, 51, of Standish, was charged with aggravated trafficking in heroin, aggravated trafficking in cocaine, and possession of heroin. Also charged was Aaron West, 36, of Westbrook, with robbery, violating conditions of release, and a theft-related arrest warrant. Jorge Torres, 30, of South Portland, was charged with aggravated trafficking in heroin, and a probation violation from a previous drug trafficking charge. Misty Gagnon, 33, of Fort Fairfield, was arrested for having theft-related warrants from an outside agency.

Police received information that a person of interest left the hotel in a vehicle as the warrant was being executed at about 5:30 p.m. The vehicle was located in the area of 396 Main St., and the driver was taken into custody without incident.

The regional SWAT team is comprised of members from the South Portland, Scarborough, and Cape Elizabeth Police Departments. Due to the specific nature of this incident, the types of felony crimes and history of suspects involved, the determination was made to utilize the team to handle the situation as safely and efficiently as possible, according to South Portland Police.

Neighbors in the area said they may have heard two loud bangs at the beginning of the incident. What they heard was the deployment of noise flash diversionary devices, or flash bangs, said police.

The investigation is ongoing, and more specific details cannot be released, according to police.
