Lightening Up
The season of Lent invites us to take stock of our lives. How are we progressing in our spiritual journey? Do we need to make some changes in our daily lives? Lent is the time of searching. Perhaps we feel the need to shake free and make a fresh start, to get ready for a new self to be born within us. A good place to begin is with simple awareness, to stop and take notice of anything that may be bogging us down and making us feel overburdened. Everywhere we go we are surrounded by the temptation to overindulge, making it difficult to focus on our basic needs. Jesus was forty days in the desert fasting and resisting temptation. Fasting is not about refraining from nourishing ourselves. The real culprit is overindulgence which slows us down. When we cease to hunger we lose our zest for life. Lent is a time to lighten up, to learn to be content with what we have, and to deepen our relationship with God through prayer. Our spiritual selves need daily attention so let’s not let our souls become couch potatoes.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
