“Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” John F. Kennedy
A. Johann Wolfgang Goethe said, “All truly wise thoughts have been thoughts already thousands of times; but to make them truly ours, we must think them over again honestly, till they take root in our personal experience!”
As the pace of our society quickens and the demand for guidance, direction and being well informed grows so does our need for knowledge.
The teacher must believe with his whole heart, for it is there, in the heart, where choice to teach is made. There are essential personality traits that define educators. They must be life-long learners and caring. They are disciplined and servants to their students.

Thornton’s students come from several towns in Southern Maine as well as from more than 20 countries. Boarding and Homestay students are staying active in the classroom, on the playing field and in the community. For students choosing to live on campus there are six dormitories. Each room includes a bed, a desk, a wardrobe, a dresser, a bookshelf, and a chair for each student.
All students have access to the campus–wide Wi-Fi, dorm lounges with big screen TVs, laundry facilities, on- campus dining providing three meals a day, plus kitchenette, piano and new outdoor basketball court. Students may also choose to live with one of the wonderful homestay families.
Living with a homestay family gives student the chance to experience true cultural exchange, and provides the individual attention and inclusion the student needs to thrive. Homestays are coordinated by Thornton Academy, and each student’s needs and interest are considered when being matched with a homestay family.
