HARPSWELL — Bradley Wallace, 30, was charged with arson after a fire Wednesday morning destroyed his rented mobile home at 92 Sunset Cove Road.

Wallace and three other people in the home escaped, but Wallace’s two dogs died in the blaze.

Wallace was taken to Cumberland County Jail after being treated at Mid Coast Hospital for burns and cuts, according to a press release from Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland. The other three people, who were staying the night, were not injured.

The Office of the Maine State Fire Marshal determined the fire, which began in Wallace’s bedroom around 6 a.m., was caused by paper products that were set on fire, McCausland said. The other people in the home were alerted to the fire by Wallace after they smelled smoke.

Chief David Mercier of Harpswell Neck Fire Department said neighbors also ran to the property after seeing the fire to ensure the inhabitants had gotten out safely.

Mercier said Orr’s/Bailey Island Fire Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department and Cundy’s Harbor Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department assisted Harpswell Neck. He said firefighters left the scene by 10:30 a.m.

Four state fire investigators were assisted at the scene by deputies from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
