BIDDEFORD — George S. Caras, 67, of Biddeford, passed away on Friday, Jan. 5, 2018, at home. 

He was born in Biddeford on March 23, 1950, a son of Paul and Vasie (Mendros) Caras. 

George was a graduate of Thornton Academy, Class of 1968. He attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute and graduated from the University of Southern Maine with a bachelor’s degree in History. 

George owned and operated Back and Ahead Bread in Old Orchard Beach, as well he co-owned Neighborhood Health & Herbs in Saco. 

George was thirsty for knowledge. He enjoyed organic gardening, cooking, baking, brewing, guitar playing, jogging, fishing, listening to the Grateful Dead, and operating his beloved HAMM Radio under the name K1FA. Additionally, he was most recently working on a cookbook with a nod to his Greek Heritage. George and many others considered him a philosopher, wine connoisseur, nutritionist, and musician. He was always willing to share his extensive knowledge with anyone, and many people sought out and valued his expertise.

Throughout his life, he gained an appreciation for the beauty and importance of his faith and was a part of the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Saco. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and by his nephew, Alex. 

He is survived by: his daughter, Paula Caras: his five siblings, Louis Caras, James Caras and his wife, Sheila, John Caras and his wife, Judy, Nicholas Caras and his wife, Laurie, and Margaret Caras Gregoire and her husband, Michael; as well as a multitude of nieces and nephews.

For all of the things he valued and considered precious, there was nothing he cherished more than his beloved daughter, Paula. He truly believed she was the greatest accomplishment of his life.  

Visiting Hhours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. with Trisagion Prayers at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018, at Cote Funeral Home Chapel, 87 James St., Saco. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018, at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Saco. Burial will follow in St. Demetrios Cemetery in Biddeford.
