“The event is being postponed … due do dangerously cold temperatures,” said Caring Unlimited Assistant Director Sherry Edwards.
According to Accuweather, the high temperature on Saturday, Jan. 6 is forecast to be 4 degrees Fahrenheit at Gooch’s Beach.
And while long term weather forecasts are always subject to change, the Jan. 13 outlook as provided by Accuweather, predicts the high temperature at 33 degrees — making the “plunge” into the Atlantic Ocean a bit more palatable.
The event is a major fundraiser for the agency. Over the years, said Edwards, the Atlantic Plunge has raised more than $250,000, which she said has helped ensure that the organization’s safety planning and support services are available on a 24-hour basis to people experiencing domestic abuse in York County.
Registration begins at 10 a.m. Jan. 13 at Gooch’s Beach on Beach Avenue in Kennebunk. The person who has turned in the most pledges at the time of the event will be awarded a Highest Fundraiser prize of a $250 LLBean Gift Card, Edwards said.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
