Brunswick – Nelson Phillips Blackburn MD FCAP, age 98, died Wednesday December 26, 2018.

He was born July 21, 1920 in Swampscott, Massachusetts a son of Thomas Anthony Blackburn and Helen Phillips Blackburn of Lynn, Massachusetts. He attended Lynn public schools, Tufts University BS 42’ and Columbia University, MD 45’. Nelson was a US Navy veteran 45’-49’. He was also a Fellow with the American Board of Pathology and College of American Pathologists (FCAP) and member of: American Society of Clinical Pathologists, American Medical Association, Maine Medical Association, and Northeast Medical Society.

He married Marilyn Jean Blackburn in 1953 and shortly thereafter moved to Maine, first living in Bangor for a short while before moving to Brunswick in 1963. In retirement, Dr. and Mrs. Blackburn wintered in Bonita Springs, FL.

He was a passionate sailor having spent a lifetime cruising the Maine coast and the Caribbean with a couple more adventurous trips to Greenland and Northwest Passageway. He was also an accomplished skier and loyal “Sugarloafer” where he held a season ticket for more than 50 years.

He is survived by his two sons, Scott Blackburn and his wife Barbara Shipley Blackburn of Brunswick, David Blackburn and his wife Sue Brawn Blackburn of Brunswick; a daughter, Gail Blackburn of Carrabassett Valley; five grandchildren, Heather Blackburn Elliot of Hiram, Georgia, Julia Shipley of Bowdoinham, Maine, Christin Oram of Park City, Utah, Lily Shipley Vosmus of Jackson, Wyoming, and Katie Oram of Lander, Wyoming:
