Kennebunk’s Nate Jewett has always been a versatile athlete in the Rams community.

He’s a multisport athlete, playing both football and hockey, and playing multiple positions in each. Now that hockey season is underway, the newly-appointed captain has been showing off his skills on both offense and defense and has been trying to lead the Rams on and off the ice.

Although Kennebunk has gotten off to a slow start in its new conference, Jewett is confident in his team, himself, and hopes to finish his high school career off strong.

Jewett will be attending Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont, and as his senior year is coming to close, he still reflects on his career from the time he was in the Biddeford Youth Hockey program.

I caught up with Jewett after the Rams took on Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse. Here is the complete interview:

AS: When did you start playing hockey?

NJ: I started playing when I was five at BYHA, the Sharks.

AS: What got you into the sport?

NJ: Well, my father brought me to the rink when I was five one day, strapped me up in some skates and I took off from there.

AS: When did you start playing for Kennebunk?

NJ: I started playing middle school hockey in Kennebunk and then I started freshman year at varsity.

AS: What was that like being thrown in the mix right away?

NJ: It was pretty nerve wracking, but you figure it out after awhile.

AS: Now that you’re a senior how would you sum up your first three years?

NJ: I made some great memories, and the coaches and the staff have really helped me get to where I am now.

AS: Is there a difference now that you’re a captain this year?

NJ: You just have to step up a little bit more and do a little bit more. You have to do it for the team.

AS: I’ve also seen that you’ve been listed as both a defenseman and a forward, what dictates what position you play?

NJ: Usually I’ll just play either. It really just depends on the spot that they need you, and I try to step up and play where they need me.

AS: Do you have a preference for either one?

NJ: I like defense more, playing the wing or left defense.

AS: Do you hope to continue to play after this year?

NJ: Hopefully I can try out for Norwich. The coach sent me a letter talking about trying out for the team so I’m going to try out for them.

AS: Do they know what position they want you to play yet?

NJ: Not yet, but I’d prefer defense. I’ll play whatever I can take though.

AS: As a team you guys have gotten off to kind of a slow start. What do you think it’ll take to turn things around moving forward?

NJ: We’re missing two seniors right now so there’s some pressure on us. We just need to regroup and figure out what we can do to turn this around. Effort — that’s our focus.
