“And lo, the star which they saw in the east went before them till it stood over where the young child was.” Matthew 2:9

A New Beginning

In just a few days we will begin the countdown to a New Year. But God does not count times as we do. The universe will remain undisturbed by all the celebrating. The earth will keep on turning at its usual speed and on the stroke of midnight, with no fanfare, it will move silently into the New Year, unaffected by our noise and revelry. On January 6 we will honor the arrival of the Magi, which marks the end of the Christmas season and the beginning of the Season of Epiphany. Epiphany is about God’s light breaking through into a darkened world. It is often referred to as The Feast of Lights, and it is a celebration of a shining forth or revelation of God to the world in the person of Jesus Christ. The Wise Men moved toward that light, offered their precious gifts to the Christ Child and departed by another route to avoid the evil Herod. And when we offer to God the best that we have, “ourselves, our souls and bodies,” we too depart by another route, for our lives are forever changed, and we are left to ponder the incredible mystery of God made flesh.
